Practice your power pose!
By Business Chicks | Oct 26, 12 09:24 AMWe love this TEDTalk by Amy Cuddy - we can't stop power posing
We all know how important body language is; it has a big impact on how others see us. But, did you realise that it may also affect how we see ourselves.
There are times in everyone’s life when we wish we felt more confident. Times when you would really appreciate that little person on your shoulder fist pumping for your success.
Research led by Professor Amy Cuddy has shown that it is possible to control these feelings, to create some extra sense of power when needed. How you ask? Power posing that’s how!
Power posing is standing in a posture of confidence - which is an open posture, such as one with your arms stretched in a v above your head or simply putting your hands on your hips and your feet hip width apart.
Power poses can affect the testosterone and cortisol levels in your brain. Standing in these poses for as little as two minutes can increase your testosterone (the hormone linked to power and dominance) and lower your amount of cortisol (the stress hormone). Meaning … that your sense of power increases and you have a greater tolerance for risk.
So before an interview, performance review, presentation or important meeting do a few power poses in the bathroom and you’ll be unstoppable!
Watch Professor Cuddy’s TEDTalk on the right; it’s brilliant!
