That Olympic winning mindset
By Business Chicks | Jul 04, 12 09:00 AMWe talk with beach volleyball legend Kerri Pottharst about our team heading to London this year; they're chasing gold!
Not long now until London, what are you most looking forward to about the games? Natalie and Tamsin gave everything in these last few weeks to get their team over the line and qualify for the London Games. It will be Tamsin’s third Olympic Games and Natalie’s fifth! Natalie will indeed create history, as she will be the only female in Australia to have competed in five Summer Olympic Games. I know that she is also hoping to carry the flag into the Opening Ceremony and will be honoured should she be chosen.
A lot of Aussies are heading over for the games; how much does home-grown support motivate you? It means the world to Nat, Tamsin and all the Aussies competing. To see familiar faces, to see the flags waving in the crowd and to see the Green and Gold boxing kangaroos jumping around with the fans gives you such a warm and fuzzy feeling. It makes you so proud and grateful to be part of such an amazing event.
Is there anything you´ll do differently to Beijing? Win more games! It would be the icing on the cake for Natalie and Tamsin to win a medal in London. It will be their last Olympics. They have both sacrificed so much to get there. They are both more mature, they have a greater hunger. It’s the biggest event of their teams playing career. They will be competing with a feeling that there will be no going back. This will be it. Watch out, as they’ll be hard to beat!
Besides physical training what kind of mindset training do you go through in the lead up to the Olympics? A lot of their preparation has been done off the court. They spend time setting their goals, working out how to achieve them and stepping it out, month by month, week by week, day by day and hour by hour. They have been working hard on their team work, off the court, as they have been living in different cities. Nat’s in Brisbane, Tamsin’s in Melbourne. And, of course, they spend time discussing their doubts, their challenges and any other obstacles they may face, with their coach, Steve Anderson.
Any tips for women in business on how to create a winning mindset? There are many pieces to the puzzle. A winning mindset doesn’t happen overnight. It’s something that has to be worked on consistently. You must have goals. You must have something to aim for. And, you must work out the steps that you need to take to achieve them. Once you’ve worked that out, you’ve then got to get on with doing them. Take a leap, get started, and don’t wait til tomorrow! Push yourself out of your comfort zone every day, get used to the feeling. This will help you grow your success. And, at the end of the day, the most important advice I can give is that you must believe in yourself. With a healthy dose of self-belief, it’s amazing how much you can achieve.
Olympic Gold Medallist Kerri Pottharst and Miss Ruby Legwear have joined forces to support our Australian Women's Beach Volleyball team as they compete on the world stage at the London Games. 25% of the proceeds of 'House of Holland's Aussie Flag' hosiery purchased will go towards supporting Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley's journey to the Olympics. These ladies are just incredible, as is their coach Steve Anderson. Not only are they great sportswomen, but also really nice people. I've had the pleasure of meeting Nat and Steve and they are just inspiring! Nat is tenacious, focused and incredibly engaging! What they are achieving is fantastic, and tomorrow night Gloria Hamilten and I are off to support Nat at her farewell dinner in Brisbane. Getting behind inspiring people like this is what it's all about! We'll certainly be cheering at the TV watching them compete in London!!Reply
