Why we love Professor Fiona Wood

By Asha Corby | Jan 01, 11 08:34 AM

Professor Fiona Wood is one exceptional woman and will join us as our guest speaker at the upcoming Melbourne and Sydney Business Chicks events.

What’s not to love about Professor Fiona Wood? Awarded Australian of the Year in 2005, she’s one of the most active, enthusiastic and down to earth people you’re ever likely to meet. She spoke for us in Perth last year and we received fantastic feedback from our members and guests.

Here’s some facts you may not know about Fiona:

  • She gets up at 5am and cycles 30kms every morning
  • She has six (yes, six) children
  • She’s married to Tony, a general surgeon
  • She immigrated to Australia (from Yorkshire) in 1987
  • In 2002, she led the team that treated the 28 survivors of the Bali bombings at the Royal Perth Hospital
  • She started the business Clinical Cell Culture (C3) which commercialised the invention of ‘spray-on skin’, a treatment that reduces the time needed to produce enough skin cells to cover major burns from five to 21 days

We’d love you to join us as we celebrate the work and life of Professor Fiona Wood, and learn from her successes and insights. We’ll also be fundraising on the morning for the McComb Foundation, Professor Wood’s foundation dedicated to research and education into burns, trauma and scarless healing.

Hi Fiona, thank you for such a wonderful engaging and inspiring talk. You are an absolute delight to listen to and your passion and sincerity really touched me. I love how you said that we are all unique and special with a unique gift to offer the world. Also how when given an opportunity we must remember that with this opportunity comes a responsibility. You are a gift to the world. Keep shining your light and inspiring others to turn on their own. Best wishes, Hedley GaltReply
